Jonavos Triathlon 2025

I recently took part in the Jonavos Triathlon Olympic distance race, finishing in 2:24 – exactly the same time as in the Kaišiadorys Triathlon earlier this season. This event was part of my preparation for the “Iron Trakai” Ironman-distance triathlon in September...
Olympic-distance triathlon race in Jonava was a natural replacement for my usual weekend training routine. After the Kaišiadorys triathlon and a two-week hiking trip in Norway, I got back into structured training:
  • Saturdays – 4 km open-water swim in the Kaunas Lagoon

  • Sundays – Long bike ride, 120–150 km

  • Weekdays – Running sessions: sometimes VO₂max track workouts (10 km under 40 min, or 5 km under 20 min),but mostly easy 12 km morning runs from home to the office.

One weekend, I tested my swimming in the sea during a short cycling trip from Klaipėda to Nida and back. I swam 4 km on the first day and only 2 km the next due to strong waves. It was a great test of resilience.
Race morning was foggy, with water at 19°C - wetsuits allowed...

By the time we started, the fog had lifted and the sun was shining.

The swim consisted of two laps of 750 m in the lake...

I finished feeling strong, quickly stripped off my wetsuit, put on my cycling shoes and helmet, and headed out for the bike leg...

The bike route was 20 km each way with some rolling hills – out of town and back again...

After the ride, it was time for the run: four laps of 2.5 km around the lake, with hills that made it tougher than Kaišiadorys...

  I finished 24th out of 92 participants, with a time of  2:24:46.

My swimming training sessions have clearly paid off, giving me more confidence in the water. The race was also a good opportunity to practice transition skills under pressure. Now, my focus shifts forward – the next triathlon will be my fifth and the biggest yet: the “Iron Trakai” Ironman-distance race in September.
