Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Germany

In April 2024, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a picturesque town in Bavaria, Germany. Nestled along the Romantic Road, Rothenburg is a quintessential medieval town that seems to have sprung straight from the pages of a fairy tale...
Its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming atmosphere made our visit unforgettable...
The White Tower, known as Weißer Turm, is one of Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s most notable landmarks, standing as a testament to the town’s rich medieval heritage. The White Tower dates back to the 12th century and is one of the oldest towers in Rothenburg. Originally part of the town's inner fortification system, it has played a crucial role in the defense of Rothenburg over the centuries...

Rothenburg is also famous for its year-round Christmas shop, Käthe Wohlfahrt’s Christmas Village. Stepping into this shop felt like entering a winter wonderland, filled with countless ornaments, decorations, and holiday items.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is renowned for its charming and well-preserved half-timbered buildings, which contribute to the town's fairy-tale atmosphere. These wooden structures, known for their distinctive timber framework filled with plaster or brick, date back to the medieval period and are characteristic of traditional German architecture.

A highlight of our trip was visiting the Market Square (Marktplatz), the heart of Rothenburg. Here, we admired the iconic Town Hall (Rathaus), with its impressive Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.
We also climbed the Town Hall Tower, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the entire town...
The climb up the Town Hall Tower is a bit challenging, involving a narrow spiral staircase, but the effort is well worth it. Once at the top, we were greeted with a breathtaking 360-degree view of Rothenburg's medieval rooftops, the winding streets, and the picturesque landscape beyond the town walls...
From this vantage point, the layout of Rothenburg is truly remarkable. The red-tiled roofs, the half-timbered houses, and the Gothic and Renaissance structures create a picturesque mosaic that is simply stunning. We could see the Market Square directly below, and other significant landmarks like St. James' Church, the Plönlein (a famous triangular square), and the Klingentor gate...

The Plönlein, one of Rothenburg ob der Tauber's most iconic and photographed spots, is a picturesque and charming location that seems to encapsulate the fairy-tale essence of this medieval town. Directly behind the Plönlein house stands the Siebersturm (Sieber’s Tower), which dates back to 1385. This tower is part of the old city walls and provides a beautiful backdrop to the Plönlein scene. The tower was originally part of the town’s second fortification line and is an excellent example of medieval military architecture...
Our visit to the Plönlein was a highlight of our trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber...

The plaza around Markus Tower and Röder Arch in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a picture-perfect destination that captures the heart and soul of this medieval town. Its historic architecture, charming streets, and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit spot...

One of the most memorable experiences was walking along the well-preserved fortification walls that encircle the medieval town. These walls, dating back to the 13th century, offer not only a glimpse into the town's rich history but also panoramic views of the picturesque surroundings...

Our journey continued to the Klingentor, one of Rothenburg’s highest towers. As we climbed, we enjoyed stunning views of the countryside and gained an appreciation for the town's strategic defenses.
