Latvia. Kemeri National Park
Traveling through Latvia, we visited the moss bogs located in Kemeri National Park, near Jurmala. Moss bogs are a type of wetland area, similar to rivers, lakes, and seashores. Kemeri Park is one of the best places to get acquainted with this natural variety...
The formation history of this moss bog dates back almost ten thousand years... After the glacial period ended, the climate became warmer and more humid, and the first layer of the future bog, "sapropel," began to form at the bottom of an ancient lake. This layer was primarily composed of sand and remains of marine animals. With constant climate changes over millennia, the lake became overgrown with grass peat, formed from dead parts of moss growing on the surface... When the densely filled peat bog began to "crack" due to internal pressure, rainwater collected in the formed openings, turning them into small lakes... Today, this area is part of Kemeri National Park...
A boardwalk path runs through the moss bogs, with the longest route being about four kilometers...
Moss bogs are a very unusual and beautiful place...
