Iceland. Fimmvorduhals trail
The Fimmvörðuháls trail, 25 kilometers long, essentially continues from the Laugavegur trail... Its main highlight is crossing the pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers and passing by two volcanic craters, Magni and Modi... But perhaps the most picturesque part of the route is the descent to the Skogar settlement... Passing along the fantastic canyon, one waterfall after another unfolds...
Route map...
From the Thorsmork campground, we had to cross the river to reach the trail to the pass... For this, a movable bridge was set up there...
Gain in altitude along the hiking trail... We were alone on the route...
All those same rusty signs indicating how far you've walked and how much is left...
As we climbed higher, the views of green mountains ended, and from both sides, the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers opened up to us...
Lava field from the volcano eruption in 2010...
We entered the volcano zone... From the summit, cosmic landscapes of the lava field and glacier were clearly visible...
Moving further along the route, the view opened up to the crater of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano... By the way, the markings were made using two-meter poles, like on a ski trail...
At the summit, passing the pass, there are no longer picturesque views of greenery... But there is a sense of 'cosmicness'...
At the actual pass, there are two houses where you can stay overnight or camp nearby... The price for a bunk bed in a dormitory room is 65 euros, and pitching a tent nearby costs 28 euros for two... There is no water around; it is somehow delivered and stored in barrels... We reached the house around noon and after lunch on the porch, we continued...
Descending several hundred meters, we found ourselves again in green landscapes...
And here it was time for waterfalls to captivate our consciousness with their power... We saw what 'real' waterfalls are like...
Then, views of the canyon joined the waterfalls...
And finally, descending to the Skogar settlement, we encountered Iceland's most famous waterfall - Skogafoss...
We also saw a rainbow, which always appears near the waterfall on sunny days...
The waterfall is 60 meters high and 25 meters wide... But above all, it impresses with the power of nature unfolding before you...
Icelandic sheep... You can meet them anywhere in the meadows along the route...
In the Skogar settlement, we completed our little hike, covering 82 kilometers in three full days... At the end of the day, we hitchhiked to the Vik settlement campground...
