Lithuania. Karklė
On another weekend, we went to the Baltic Sea, to the village of Karklė, located between Palanga and Klaipėda... There are many resort cottages and campgrounds here, one of which we chose for our overnight stay... The plan for the weekend was to walk along the coast, swim a bit in the sea, and visit the unique Amber Museum in Palanga the next day...
Map of the location...
The water temperature in the sea at the end of May reaches 10 degrees, so to stay in the water a bit longer, we wore wetsuits...
Baltic seagulls...
Collecting amber along the coast has already become a tradition... We are captivated and impressed by this Baltic adornment, especially after learning about its age... According to encyclopedia sources, the formation of Baltic amber takes over 40 million years, while our species appeared only 200 thousand years ago... So every time we find amber, we seem to touch eternity...
Another feature of the Baltic coast is the tall pine forests that stretch along the sea... You can organize a walk in such a way that part of the route is through forest trails, and return along the coast in exciting searches for amber...
Since the end of May in the Baltics is not yet the beginning of the season, we were the only ones in the campground and had the opportunity to choose the best spot for our tent... The toilet, shower, and kitchen were all at our disposal... Interestingly, the administration was closed, and we communicated with the owner only by phone, and we left the money for our stay (10 euros) in a special box...
The next day, after a morning run along the forest trails and the sea coast, a delicious breakfast, and a small reading session, we packed up around noon and went to the Amber Museum...
The most notable and at the same time the heaviest piece of amber is the so-called "Sunstone," weighing 3524 grams...
The stands describe the process of extracting fossilized resin and samples from different regions of Lithuania and the world...
The most interesting is the room where pieces of amber with various insects inside are collected. How can you not be impressed by the frozen figures, about 50 million years old...
Spiders...
Millipede...Dragonflies...
Ichneumon wasps... One of the largest families of parasitic insects in the world...
Crane flies...
Different kinds of flies...
Lizard...
The museum also has a shop where you can buy items made of real amber... We bought a piece of amber with a fly inside, estimated to be about 50 million years old... The information indicated in the certificate that comes with it was determined by the only Lithuanian scientist in this field from Vilnius University, who is also responsible for forming the museum's collection dedicated to insects trapped in amber... By the way, the stand that comes with the amber shows an enlarged photograph of the insect from that piece... Green fly (Dolichopodidae)... Amber weight is 6.7 grams...
It's hard to even imagine that the age of the fly frozen in the resin of ancient coniferous trees is 50 million years... Now we have a reminder at home of the insignificance of humanity on a global scale, with its history of 200 thousand years...
